DBA

A DBA allows sole proprietorships to operate under a name different from the owner’s legal name, which can make the company appear more professional. DBAs can also be useful when a company wants to introduce a new product or line of business under a different name but doesn’t want to create a new legal entity.

LLC / CORPORATIONS

A Limited Liability Company (LLC) is a business structure allowed by state law. The owners of an LLC are called members.

MC

MC number (Motor Carrier number) is also an interstate operating authority and unique identifier assigned by the FMCSA to moving companies operating in interstate commerce, in other words hauling cargo across state lines.

USDOT

A USDOT number is a unique identifier that is given to companies that engage in interstate, and in some cases, intrastate, commerce. It aids in monitoring to streamline safety compliance and is used when conducting official audits, reviews, and accident investigations.

BOC-3

By filing the BOC3, which stands for blanket of coverage, a trucking company designates the process agents that represent them in every state their trucks haul freight. The designated process agent will accept court papers from the state on behalf of the trucking company should there ever be a legal issue.

UCR

UCR stands for Unified Carrier Registration program. It is a federally-mandated system for registering operators of commercial vehicles who are involved in interstate and international travel. This annual registration must be renewed by December 31 each year. Registration for the upcoming year began on October 1.

IFTA

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is a pact between the lower 48 states and the ten Canadian provinces that require all interstate motor carriers to report fuel taxes. The agreement doesn’t affect Hawaii, Alaska or the three northern Canadian territories.

IFTA FILLING

Qualifying commercial motor vehicles traveling in more than one U.S. state or Canadian province are required to file a consolidated report of motor fuels taxes (e.g., gasoline, diesel fuel, liquefied gas, compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas taxes) under the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA).

TXDMV

Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) number is a unique identifier issued to commercial vehicle operators by the state of Texas. If you have a TXDOT number, you are required to display the number prominently on your vehicle. A TXDOT number is similar to the U.S. Department Of Transportation (USDOT) number.

EIN

An employer identification number (EIN) is a nine-digit number assigned by the IRS. It’s used to identify the tax accounts of employers and certain others who have no employees. The IRS uses the number to identify taxpayers who are required to file various business tax returns.

2290 FORM

The IRS 2290 tax is called Heavy Highway Vehicle Used Tax Return. It is used to figure out and pay the HVUT due on highway motor vehicles used during the period of time in which a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more is accrued.

TEXAS FRANCHISE TAX (STATE COMPTROLLER)

The Texas franchise tax is a privilege tax imposed on each taxable entity formed or organized in Texas or doing business in Texas. This report must be filed every May 15 of each year.

APPORTIONED PLATES

Apportioned registration, also known as the International Registration Plan (IRP), lets you obtain registration credentials in one jurisdiction, giving you the freedom of interstate travel without the inconvenience and expense of purchasing trip permits.

COMBINATION PLATES

A truck or truck tractor with a gross weight of more than 10,000 pounds that is used in combination with a semitrailer having a gross weight in excess of six thousand (6,000) pounds must be registered with a combination plate for a gross weight equal to the combined gross weight of all vehicles in the combination.

SURETY BOND / OVERWEIGHT

The oversize overweight surety bond might ensure that the operator will not cause damage to the pavement, structures, bridges, roadway, drainage structures or other damages and will comply with the permit schedule.

SURETY BONDED TITLE

When a vehicle is received in Texas without sufficient or complete proof of ownership, the owner of the vehicle may be asked to obtain what is called a bonded title as an alternative to a tax assessor-collector hearing. A bonded title is identical to an original title except it has a surety bond is attached to it.

SIDEWALK, DRIVEWAY, CURB AND GUTTER BUILDER BOND

A Texas City of Houston Sidewalk, Driveway, Curb and Gutter Builder Bond is a type of surety bond needed before you can get a permit to begin doing work on sidewalks, driveways, curbs, and gutters in Houston, Texas. Instead, it will protect the state of Texas and anyone you come in contact with during your work.

Trucking factoring companies also known as freight factoring companies give you an advance on your outstanding invoices, and they collect the payment from your customer when the invoice is due. Additionally, trucking factoring companies can often take the risk of nonpayment off your shoulders for a percentage.

FMCSA MCS-150 BIENNIAL UPDATE

You must complete your biennial update every two years. The month in which your update is due will depend on the last digit of your USDOT number. If your USDOT number ends in 1, for example, your update is due in January. If your next to last digit is even, you will complete your biennial update in even-numbered years.

FMCSA NEW ENTRANT SAFE AUDIT

A Safety Audit is a review of a motor carrier’s records designed to verify that a carrier has basic safety management controls in place to ensure compliance with applicable Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMRs), and related record keeping requirements.

FMCSA CLEARINGHOUSE

The Clearinghouse is a secure online database that will give employers, FMCSA, State Driver Licensing Agencies, and State law enforcement personnel real-time information about CDL driver drug and alcohol program violations, thereby enhancing safety on our Nation’s roadways

FMCSA CONSORTIUM

A drug screening consortium is an association of companies or groups of employers that join together, as a single entity, for the purpose of Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing of its members.

MCS-90

MCS-90 Endorsement: An endorsement that must be attached to the auto liability policy of certain regulated motor carriers to ensure that federally mandated coverage (e.g., required liability limits and environmental restitution coverage) is in place. The endorsement does not actually provide insurance except on a reimbursement basis. This form usually is require to customers that will be audit by FMCSA.
